Sugar Cane Farming
In The Burdekin

Established in 2005 and centered around the world-class Burdekin River Irrigation Region, Australian Cane Farms is one of Australia’s largest sugar cane producers.

ACF has a strong track record in buying and integrating farms into its best practice management regime resulting in top quartile productivity and reaping the benefits of low-cost operations through scale economics.

Established Producer

  • LAND

ACF owns and operates an aggregation of over 4,390 hectares of highly productive farmland with over 49,000ML of associated water rights.

  • PRODUCTION

ACF’s annual production is around 400,000 tonnes of cane with a further 1,500 tonnes of legume break crops.

  • FINANCIAL

ACF has total assets of $135 million generating revenue of $25m.

Secure Water Entitlements

  • 100% of the farms in the portfolio have access to reliable irrigation water from the Burdekin Falls dam.

  • The dam has a storage capacity of 1.86 million megalitres (four times that of Sydney harbour) and a catchment area of 114,000 km². A 400km channel system delivers irrigation water to individual farms in the Scheme.

  • ACF has total channel and underground water entitlements equating to 12.8ML per hectare per annum over the total arable land excluding normal fallow, well in excess of Burdekin benchmark of 8ML.

  • As far north Queensland receives extensive and consistent rainfall over the summer “wet” season (the Burdekin Dam spills most season) ACF can be highly confident of receiving 100% of its annual entitlement if needed.

Premier Location

The Burdekin is widely considered one of the best places in the world to grow sugar cane due to its 100% irrigation, ideal agronomic conditions, and open access to world-class infrastructure.

50KM southwest of Townsville, the Burdekin comprises 90,000 hectares and accounts for around 25% of Australia’s sugar production.
